Apple iPhone 5 Features and Release Date

Apple iPhone 5 Features and Release Date

As the 5th cycle of the iPhone is on the borderline of being discharged, and with every last trace of the hypotheses spreading on the Internet concerning the iPhone 5, folks are suspecting and urgently holding up for the launch of the smartphone. Countless fans and current Apple iPhone purchasers are considering what momentous offers Apple will put in the unique iPhone 5.
This sections abridges the many sided offers and determinations that are anticipated to wear the mechanism.

iPhone 5 Features

Even though Apple tries not to disclose the careful particulars and emphasizes until the apparatus is formally disclosed, we might manage some of the prevailing offers that are looked for. Nonetheless, gossip of the brand new iPhone 5 emphasizes, in terms of both equipment and product updates, will unmistakably tempt any smart phone purchaser.
The upcoming telephone is looked for to brandish the Apple's most cutting edge and most terrific A5 processor chip, iCloud aid, higher-determination zoom lens, and a 4-crawl screen size. Here are some of the most exceptionally reckoned iPhone 5 offers:

iOS 5

Apple proclaimed iOS 5.0 and its offers in the midst of the WWDC 2011 keynote location on June 6, 2011. The user interface is dependent upon the notion of immediate control, utilizing multi-touch motions. It is looked for to gone with something greater than 200 revamped offers that will incorporate upgraded Notification System, News Stand and iMessage.
iMessage is a requisition that is advanced to contend with Blackberry Messenger. The application will permit iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad users to impart (much similar to a talk utility) with one another. The iMessage offer has been mixed into the SMS/MMS provision utilized initially on the iPhone models.

iPhone 5

iCloud

The iPhone5 is looked for to have the iCloud aid.
Macintosh's iPhone 5 is anticipated to emphasize the revamped iCloud aid for satellite remote access of music from all PCs and versatile units.
The iPhone5 will mechanically match up with the iCloud which will permit users to archive photographs, applications, logbooks and reports without having them to archive in the telephone's memory. Fruit is in addition gazing to tie toward top music mark ensembles to permit tunes for the iCloud aid.
In any case, rumours state that Apple may discharge a flat-price “iCloud iPhone” almost touching the iPhone 5. It might be named the “iPhone Mini”
“The iPhone Mini (or iPhone Nano, or whatever) would be able to have quite less space than a regular iPhone. In all likelihood 8 gigabytes of space – the same as the least finish iPhones at this time. Fruit won’t forestall users from saving their particular substance, on the grounds that could be mad. However subsequent to it has a modest sum of memory, Apple will conceivable prod the capability to stream media via MobileMe simultaneously.”

A5 Processor to power the iPhone5Apple A5 Processor to power iPhone 5

iPhone 5 will house the A5 as the principle processor, which particularly is the same chip that as of now capacities the iPad 2. The A5 holds a double-heart ARM Cortex-A9 CPU with NEON SIMD quickening agent and a double heart PowerVR SGX543MP2 GPU, which implies that the iPhone5 can do twice the work immediately. The processor speed should be an as yet undisclosed place among 1.2 to 1.5 GHz, with undoubtedly a 1GB RAM.
The processor overhaul is finished not to expand the transforming speed of the telephone, but likewise to rival the recently started Samsung Galaxy S II.
The A5 chip could practically expand the capacity utilize, notwithstanding, it is expressed that the chip has “got a progressive capacity administration”, which can bring down the [speed] hinging on the workload, and in this way productively make utilize of the control.

iPhone 5 to Sport a Better Camera

The iPhone 4 brandishes a 5 megapixel zoom lens, so I’m looking for that the iPhone 5 will have a back-confronting 8MP double-LED blaze picture clicker. In any case, this isn’t positively “amazing”, after the greater part of the towering-closure Android smartphones join a 8MP camera. As well as that, the iPhone 5 is looked for to have a front-encountering picture clicker for film visiting.

iPhone Features
Consistent with roots, Apple has indexed some patent provisions identifying with 3D picture catching to the US Patent and Trademark Office later in March. This demonstrates that the iPhone 5 may emphasize a 3D camera. The recording demonstrates that the mechanism could be equipped for of catching, preparing and rendering 3D pictures with double-picture clicker fittings. An additional intriguing offer is that the iPhone 5 should be skilled for the purpose of taking pictures in Panorama. It will work comparatively to the ’360 Panorama’ provision in the App Store. It will spared you the time to take pictures in a succession as you move the picture clicker from one side to a different, which toward the finale will easily line the visualizations as one to make a scene.
Furthermore, if Apple totally would like to stay informed concerning the rivalry to Android, then it may regard enhancing the motion picture determination to a full 1080p HD recording. Presently iPhone 4 has a 720p film catch at 30 casings for every second.

Display and Resolution

There hasn’t been a preferred screen determination subsequent to the discharge of the iPhone 4. As of now the iPhone 4 has a 3.5 crawls screen size, and causes demonstrate that Apple could stay bolted with the present size. At the same time a few alternate origins declare that Apple is wanting to build the screen size to 4-creep with higher screen determination. I feel that Apple might bargain at 3.7-creep or 3.75-creep.

Apple iPhone 5

In any case, the iPhone 5 might be a little more extensive and thinner. The extents are Calculated to be: 4.33″ x 2.36″ and .27″ thickness at the top and .21″ at the base, although the measurements of iPhone 4 are: 4.5″ x 2.31″ x .37″
iPhone 5

Other iPhone5 Features

Here are some of the other features that we can expect from the iPhone 5:
  •  Face Recognition Security
  •  4G/LTE support – According the AT&T documents leaked by LulzSec, the Apple iPhone 5 will offer 4G and will be LTE (Long Term Evolution) network compatible. LTE is a project of the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), and is the latest standard in the mobile network technology.
  •  A new, sleeker body design
  •  OLED screen
  •  Scratch proof and shatter proof screen
  •  Wireless sync with iTunes
  •  Extended battery life
  •  Flash support
  •  SIM-Less Phone – According to International Business Times, it is rumoured that the iPhone 5 will feature a new SIM-less design with 2 to 3 internal antennas for CDMA and GSM compatibility, which will make it a “worldphone”.
  •  Physical Keyboard
  •  Increased Ram (from 512MB to 1GB)
  •  New Multi-tasking Look
  •  HD Audio
  •  Built In GPS
The aforementioned offers are some of the enhancements that we could probably look for from Apple. On the other hand, we cannot guarantee you that they might be correct, but a large portion of the redesigns are more possible to be used.
Fruit likely would like to battle once again in opposition to Android smartphone creators like HTC and Samsung, and probably it is why the late iPhone 5 will accommodate some of the remarkable emphasizes.

iPhone 5 Launch Date

Apple accompanies a custom to start brand new apparatuses in their mid year Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), but that didn’t happen for the present year.
In any case, BGR reported that an AT&T Vice President has affirmed to some workers that the iPhone 5 that gloats a stronger chip for handling information and a more propelled picture clicker is planned to be started in promptly October. Moreover, the VP conveyed the accompanying to a bunch of directors: “Expect things to get totally, positively hectic in the following 35-50 days, so arrange your crews subsequently.”
We would be able to look for the declaration of the iPhone 5 in a late September occasion on top of a discharge date set for promptly October.
The iPhone 4 has demonstrated to be one of the most obviously successful smartphones of record-breaking with pitching over 1.7 million mechanisms in unequivocally a few days of accesability, and we are looking for that the iPhone 5 will absolutely duplicate this achievement, and one thing is beyond any doubt – the bargains of iPhone 5 will likely blast and we could probably look for a tremendous number of individuals lined up at Apple stores when the gadget is ready for deal.

iPhone 5 Price

At this stage no official cost has been revealed but we look for the iPhone 5 to be the same cost than the iPhone 4 when it was discharged. We will upgrade this area whenever we have more data on that subject.

Laplink PCmover Software Review

Laplink PCmover Software Reviewes

Laplink PCmover is a Windows 7 upgrade assistant application that migrates all user programs, files and settings from an older version of Windows to the new version. The PCmover Pro is designed to be consumer friendly and extremely easy to use, so that the upgrade process is simplified for everyone.
There are completely different versions of PCmover to allow for varying upgrade situations ranging from home and personal use to business and enterprise edition upgrades. Obviously a business upgrade will involve multiple devices so the price is significantly higher.
The idea with the PCmover software is to directly migrate a user’s favorite applications and programs as well as custom user settings into the new operating system. As most people have a few programs and applications they can’t live without, Laplink’s goal was to make it easy for said consumers to upgrade without losing their preferences.
Some folks may be reluctant to try the migration so we’re going to review Laplink’s PC Mover software and decide if it’s worthy for use.

Laplink PCmover Migration Software Review

There are six different versions of the PCmover software all with varying settings and features, available starting from $29.95 for the standard Upgrade Assistant to $59.95 for the Professional version. Anyone interested in utilizing the Business and Enterprise edition must call Laplink customer support for a price quote.
Laplink PCmover Migration Software with Data Transfer KitUnfortunately the software requires a high speed data connection between the new and old PC, however this can be done through a simple network, network device or portable (external) storage device. The boxed copy of Laplink’s PC Mover software comes bundled with a high speed ethernet data transfer cable, but the digital version leaves consumers to fend for themselves; so only purchase the digital software if there’s already a method available to transfer data between PCs.
In our testing environment, migrating settings from an older Windows XP business laptop to a new Windows 7 home desktop, we were required to install the Laplink PC Mover software on both machines.
The user interface of PCmover is very simple, and will definitely be navigable for anyone- even those folks who know nothing about computers. Moving from step to step in the migration process simply required us to read through well defined instructions and perform a few simple button clicks (which for the most part only required us to choose “next”). Depending on the PC Mover version selected, users may also have to choose which programs they would like copied over to the new machine. In our case, we chose a few applications and programs we knew would copy over successfully.
Laplink PCmover Migration Software Application ChoiceThe general knowledge of what will copy over successfully is not required to take advantage of the PCmover software. The application itself gives a warning for select programs and applications that may have issues during the migration process. The few programs that cause issues during a transfer are namely Microsoft .net framework related files and DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected software. But most DRM protected files can be downloaded and installed directly to the new operating system via other methods, so there’s really nothing to worry about there.
The PCmover software provides several different options for actually migrating applications and transferring files (through a network, via portable media or an external storage device, through a high speed data transfer cable, or through a high speed USB 2.0 connection). We chose the option to migrate our “old” settings to our new machine via a home network, which in turn required us to choose which programs are transferred (not all software versions allow this selection process).
PCmoverAs you can see from the image on the left the file transfer is really quite simple, anyone can take advantage of the software- even those who aren’t computer savvy. It’s pretty much a three step process, install the application on both related machines, connect the PCs and make sure data is ready to be synchronized and then start the migration process.

PCmover Software Successful Application Transfers

To more specifically detail what types of files can be moved, we’ve compiled a small list of application types that copied over successfully during our testing session.
– Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint) copied over flawlessly as well as the individual settings.
– Personal files and documents copied over successfully with no problems whatsoever (Photos, Videos, Music, Podcasts).
– Several PC games we had installed copied over successfully, however games that require DRM protection methods must be installed locally on the new machine. The Steam game environment and all related games must also be downloaded locally via the new machine as a transfer via PCmover won’t work correctly.
– Financial and tax related software was copied successfully, including all user settings, information and related spreadsheets.
– Thankfully, all browser settings (including bookmarks and saved login information) were successfully copied to the new machine as well; we copied over settings from IE, Firefox, Google Chrome, and Rockmelt.

PCmover Migration Software Review

Upon completion of our system and application migration, we did not run into any further problems; which means the entire transfer was completely successful. That being said, we’ve had some experience with migration software in the past, so we had a basic understanding of what programs and applications could be trusted to PCmover for a migration. We didn’t directly attempt to copy any DRM protected files or information, nor did we copy anything that could be installed locally via the new machine thanks to a simple download.
Laplink PCmover Migration Software Transfer MethodsNonetheless, there really isn’t an alternative to Laplink’s PCmover software and Microsoft doesn’t offer native migration options when installing or upgrading to Windows 7 (they do somewhat but the migration is very limited). This doesn’t mean that the PCmover software would be at the bottom of the list if it were pitted against some competition; we’re just merely pointing out there are no other options.
Rightfully so, the PCmover migration software is perfect for a plethora of different users and working environments. Home and personal users looking to upgrade will enjoy the personal file and settings migration as well as the migration of some favorite applications and programs. Business and Enterprise users will likely enjoy the migration of important business software and platforms, as well as the migration of important network and connection settings.
All in all, the Laplink PCmover migration software saves a lot of time, and can subsequently transfer over important information to a new PC with little to no hassle. In fact, if we would have known an upgrade could be this simple thanks to PCmover we probably would have taken the dive a lot sooner.
To elaborate even further, it’s safe to say for those few users out there who have been waiting to upgrade because it can be a hassle, PCmover software is what you need! The Laplink PCmover software is simple, intuitive, and it really doesn’t cause an even bigger hassle during the migration process (which in this day and age is truly a revered feature).
The cheapest place we found for buying PCmover is the official PCmover site. There is no other place you should go to get it. Click here to choose the version you want and order it now!

Generate Strong Passwords with Wolfram

Generate Strong Passwords with Wolfram

Wolfram Alpha – an online engine that in some respects is more powerful than Google – can also be used for generating strong and unique passwords for your various online accounts.
To get started, go to the wolframalpha.com website and type a natural-language query like password of n characters to create your unique password (n is the length of the password).
wolfram password
Unlike other password generators, Wolfram Alpha offers a phonetic form for every password to make it a bit easier for you to memorize that complex string. It also shows the time it would take for a computer to break that particular password.
While the default settings in Wolfram are good enough to create strong passwords, you may also provide specific password rules like whether the password should have special characters, should every character be different, are number allowed and so on. Useful!

Google TV is a Value-for-Money Device

Google TV is a Value-for-Money Device

google_TVThe content on the web is exploding, our Internet speeds are getting better and, fortunately enough, there are a plethora of affordable devices available that can bring most of the online content to our living room TV without even requiring a computer.
This category of devices, also known as digital media players, connect to your TV at one end and the set-top box at the other.
It doesn't matter whether you have a standard TV or an HDTV – they should have the right input ports and then all you need is a wired or wireless Internet connection to enjoy the web from your couch.
Which Media Player should you choose?
When it comes to choosing a media player, your main options are Roku, Boxee, Apple TV, WD TV Live and Logitech Revue powered by Google TV. If you are in the the US, you would probably compare the boxes based on their support for Netflix, Hulu, Pandora, Amazon Movies, etc. but the selection criteria would be very different here as none of streaming services are available in India.
The $99 Apple TV is polished but mostly designed for people who buy content from iTunes. Boxee supports most common video formats and offers a wide variety of content but at $199, Boxee TV is twice as expensive as the other digital media receivers.
The new Roku media player, Roku 2 XS, also offers content from popular sources and the box itself is quite portable but there are some major limitations - Roku does not 'officially' supports YouTube nor can it stream content over the home network out-of-the-box. That means if you have photos and videos stored on your computers, you cannot enjoy them on your TV even if the Roku box and the computers are on the same network.

The $99 Logitech Revue with Google TV

I therefore decide to go with Google TV based Logitech Revue which runs on Google TV. Revue is available on Amazon.com for $99 and the convenient part is that you can get it delivered to any address in India for a $26 shipping fee - I didn't have to pay any import duties either so it was kind of a good deal.
I have been using it for about two weeks now and really like the thing. Here's a quick video tour /review of the device in action:

Google TV Review - It works outside the US too!

The installation was pretty straight-forward. You connect Google TV to the TV unit with an HDMI cable while the other HDMI cable connects the set-top box to Google TV - the latter step is optional but you would need that in case you like to watch Internet content alongside your regular TV channels.
The integration of Google TV with YouTube is absolutely fantastic. You can switch to the Leanback mode for a full-screen experience. If you are signed in with your Google account, you can also access your YouTube playlist and favorites on TV.
Google TV offers one-click access to video content from popular sources like CNN, The New York Times, CNET, Revision3, al-Jazeera and more. On a side note, I am quite surprised that Leo Laporte's TWIT.tv is missing in the list though you can always add that channel on your using the Queue feature mentioned below.
The unit ships with Google Chrome browser so you can enjoy virtually all Internet content on your TV just like you do on a computer. I doubt if I would ever use a TV for replying to emails or for creating a presentation but that is quite easy to do with Google TV's browser.
It might feel a bit odd to use a QWERTY keyboard as a remote control for your TV but you don't have to - there are free mobile apps available that will turn you iPhone, iPad or your Android mobile phone into a remote for Google TV. Unfortunately, these apps aren't available in the Indian iTunes store but you can easily bypass that with a second iTunes account.
The other interesting feature in Google TV is Google Queue. This actually a podcast catcher application where you can subscribe to video podcasts and stay updated as new shows become available. The podcasts are however streamed directly from the Internet as Google TV has no storage for downloading podcasts.
The Revue keyboard, like the Chromebook laptops, have a dedicated search button that lets you simultaneously search the web, video channels and Twitter among other places. It is easy to switch between Internet TV and cable TV or you can use the Picture-in-Picture (PIP) button to watch regular TV while also replying to a tweet on Google TV.
Google TV is designed for the American market and thus it would only recognize your set-top box as a "Generic Video Source" meaning you won't be able to search your TV programing schedule from Google TV. Also, I was unable to configure the Revue controller as a remote for the cable set-top-box.
Most online publications slammed Google TV when it launched initially with a $249 price tag but with the recent price drop, Google TV is suddenly a value-for-money device. And with Honeycomb upgrade expected in the coming weeks, which will bring more Android based apps to your living room TV, the scales could further tilt in favor of Google TV.

iPad VPN iPad VPN and Why We Need VPN On iPad
With the advancement of technology we are moving fast and access to the resources has become more easy and reliable. The Global village has so many facilities to connect you with the world. There is a technology known as VPN (128-bit encrypted tunnel), stands for Virtual Private Network which allows creating a private network by using internet, allowing users to share information privately by data encryption so that no one could access the information. The technology known as ISDN has been replaced with VPN.
iPad VPN iPad VPN and Why We Need VPN On iPad
iPad also provides VPN option. There are different protocols which are used to help access VPN services like L2TP, Cisco IPSec, PPTP or L2TP over IPSec. These protocols work with a variety of VPN solutions. To use VPN on iPad, first thing is its configuration settings. iPad also supports VPN on demand which means that I will automatically establish a connection whenever it is accessing the predefined domains. Configure VPN on demand by configuration profile. On demand VPN provides three options; always, if needed and never. Select, which is suitable for you.
Advantages of VPN:
  • Share information and data securely,
  • Access any country's services just by getting the IP of that country,
  • Can hide your IP address for security purposes,
  • Can access blocked softwares and websites,
  • Bypass all firewall restrictions,
  • Can prevent snoopers and hackers.
There are many third partly applications and tools available which helps you to established Virtual Private Networks. Some of them are known as
  • Cisco (Application),
  • Juniper (Application),
  • Hotspot shield (Tool),
  • Tor VPN (Tool),
  • Ultra Surf (Tool),
  • CyberGhost (Tool),
And so much more.
Now the Question which arises in mind is that why we need VPN on iPad? There are several reasons to have VPN option in iPads.
  • We all are well-aware of the fact that IT has progressed a lot and there is a strong need of mobile network devices. So now these options are available in different mobile devices like iPad to keep you connected to your world and to enjoy unrestricted internet.
  • Businesses are expanding and transferring on virtual networks and there is a strong need of such services which could provide access to remote sites and users.
  • Nowadays Virtual networks are established in many hospitals, clinics, utilities and public places for security, records, management and access to software applications by using mobile devices like iPad VPN.
  • In case of emergency or to avail any public service mobile VPNs are helpful to provide instant access.
  • A mobile VPN integrates all mobile and desk phones in a common network.

Thunderbolt Display Technology

Thunderbolt Display Technology

Apple Introducing World First Thunderbolt Display Technology

You’ve never seen a display quite like this. With built-in Thunderbolt technology, it doesn’t just give you more pixels. It gives you more possibilities.

Thunderbolt technology.
Built right in.

The fastest, most flexible I/O ever lets this display do things others simply can’t.
Thunderbolt I/O technology lets you move data between your devices and your computer with unprecedented speed. With two channels of 10-Gbps throughput in both directions, it’s up to 20 times faster than USB 2.0 and up to 12 times faster than FireWire 800. And it allows you to connect as many as six devices through a single, compact port. Now, for the first time, all that power and flexibility is available through a port built right into your display. Which makes the Apple Thunderbolt Display so much more than just a pretty screen.

The ultimate docking station.

With built-in Thunderbolt and MagSafe connections, the Apple Thunderbolt Display transforms any new Mac notebook into a complete desktop workstatio

One-cable convenience. Thunderbolt versatility.

With its 27-inch LED-backlit screen, the new Thunderbolt Display delivers a brilliant viewing experience. But connect it to any Thunderbolt-enabled Mac, and it becomes a plug-and-play hub for everything you do. You get 27 inches of high-resolution screen space, high-quality audio, a FaceTime HD camera, and support for FireWire 800 and Gigabit Ethernet. All through a single connection.

MagSafe connector.

The Thunderbolt Display includes a MagSafe connector that powers and charges your MacBook Pro or MacBook Air. The connector sits on your desk, ready and waiting. No need to unwind the cord to the power adapter that came with your notebook. Leave it exactly where it is, in your bag.

Do more with MacBook Air.

Connect MacBook Air to the Thunderbolt Display and you can do even more with a computer that already does a lot. Like adding FireWire peripherals, connecting to Ethernet networks at gigabit speeds, and making large-as-life, HD video calls to other Mac users with the built-in FaceTime HD camera.

Expand the capabilities of your MacBook Pro.

Connect two Thunderbolt Displays to a 15- or 17-inch MacBook Pro or to an iMac and put an extra 7 million pixels to work. To make a desktop workstation out of your MacBook Pro, just daisy-chain additional Thunderbolt devices, including high-performance storage and video and audio capture devices, through the display.

See the bigger picture.

A 27-inch widescreen display with LED backlight technology. Stunning is an understatement.

A bigger display for your biggest ideas.

Connect your Thunderbolt-enabled Mac to the Apple Thunderbolt Display for a panoramic viewing experience unlike any other. This huge 27-inch glossy widescreen display features a cinematic 16:9 aspect ratio and an astonishing 2560-by-1440 resolution. That gives you more room to work with apps on your MacBook Air. More pixels for your MacBook Pro. And a worthy desktop companion to your iMac or Mac mini.

LED backlighting. Bright on.

Full brightness with no waiting. That’s the big advantage of LED backlight technology. Unlike most displays that take time to warm up before they reach maximum brightness, an LED-backlit display is instantly on and uniformly bright. LED backlighting also gives you greater control over screen brightness. So you can tune the Thunderbolt Display to suit the ambient light in even the dimmest room.

Built-in FaceTime HD camera and microphone.

With the built-in FaceTime HD camera and microphone, you can connect your Mac desktop or notebook — open or closed — and make HD video calls or take a few snapshots using Photo Booth.

Crystal clear from every angle.

The Thunderbolt Display looks great from any seat in the house, thanks to a premium display technology called in-plane switching (IPS). IPS delivers a bright picture with excellent color consistency, even if you’re viewing the display from the side.

Big, beautiful sound.

The Thunderbolt Display gives you more than video. It gives you audio, too. The built-in speaker system includes an integrated subwoofer that delivers immersive, full-range sound for music, movies, and games.

Ambient light sensor.

The ambient light sensor intelligently adjusts the brightness of the Thunderbolt Display to your room environment. This gives you the perfect brightness for any situation while using the least amount of energy necessary.

Smooth-motion hinge.

Tilt the Thunderbolt Display to get the viewing angle that’s best for you. With its smooth-motion hinge, adjustment is effortless. Choose an angle from -5 to 25 degrees.

Apple iMac 27-inch (3.1GHz, spring 2011)

Apple iMac 27-inch (3.1GHz, spring 2011)

The good: The new 27-inch iMac offers the best performance among current all-in-ones, along with the largest display, the best design, and exciting potential from its Thunderbolt ports.
The bad: We still miss built-in HDMI inputs for easy media component integration, and, as usual, custom hardware options for the iMac remain more expensive than those for its Windows-based competition.
The bottom line: We recommend Apple's new 27-inch iMac to digital media editors and others with serious performance needs on the strength of its impressive speed, its connected device potential, and its market-leading 27-inch display.

With a fast new second-generation Core i5 CPU, a high-end 3D card, and support for promising Thunderbolt high-bandwidth peripheral connection ports, the new, highest-end iMac has plenty to offer media professionals and enthusiasts in terms of performance and peripheral device flexibility. For consumers, while the iMac still claims industry bests in terms of its display and its design, this system will feel like overkill in some respects, and underfeatured in others. We don't recommend the most expensive new iMac for those looking for an OS X-based alternative to the recent crop of Windows-based all-in-ones that act as home entertainment kiosks. For serious media editors, or those looking for a vanity desktop, the $1,999 Apple iMac remains one of the fastest, most attractive systems available.
Windows all-in-one makers like Dell, HP, and Sony have improved their all-in-one designs over the last year or two, but none of them approaches the iMac for sheer visual appeal. The metal-and-glass unibody chassis, along with the expansive 27-inch display, still have no design peers roughly 18 months after their debut. We actually find it strange that you still won't find a 27-inch all-in-one from anyone other than Apple. We wonder how long that will last.

Opera Unite

Opera Unite

Opera Unite is a new technology platform allowing you to share content directly with friends, without having to upload anything to a Web site. You can stream music, show photo galleries, share files and folders, or even host your own Web pages directly from your browser.

An introduction to Opera Unite

Introduction

The time has come to raise the curtain on yet another exciting new Opera technology release. The drums are playing a low roll, which increases in intensity as the onlookers stare in antici … pation; the lights begin to come up, along with the curtain; the stage is all set for passion and the energy of today’s performance; the narrator spoils the mood by talking through it (that’s me…)
So what is Opera Unite? In a nutshell, Opera Unite is a collaborative technology that uses a compact server inside the Opera desktop browser to share data and services. You can write applications — in the form of Opera Unite Services — that use this server to serve content to other Web users.
Why is this exciting? Well, it allows you to interact with contacts, sharing data and services without the need for any third-party Web sites/applications to be involved at all. Think of the possibilities:
  • You could play games and chat to your peers directly using the service
  • You could share photos and videos with peers, straight off your hard drive, without needing to use third-party Web applications
  • You can work collaboratively with others on files such as data and images (think wikis or drawing applications), and then work with those files offline if you wish, before sharing them again at a later date
  • You could even start creating some crazy hacks, like an application that controls a remote car across the Web (I’ve seen a rough prototype in action)
Itching to know more? Good. In this article I first present a tour of Opera Unite, with details of how to activate it, how to install a Opera Unite service, and how to use those services to collaborate with your friends and colleagues. If you want to find out more about developing your own Opera Unite Services, read our Opera Unite developer's primer.

Getting Opera Unite up and running

So, it’s time for you to get your hands dirty, and starting playing with some Opera Unite Services.

Installation

The first thing you need to do, if you haven’t already, is download the latest version of the Opera for desktop. This is our regular browser so what’s different? Well, nothing immediately jumps out, but rest assured that you’ve got a lot of new power under the hood with Opera Unite Services.
As we mentioned before, with Opera Unite you can run Opera Unite Services in the browser and collaborate with your friends. So let's try this out, by installing a service from the Opera Unite home page — navigate to this page now, and click on one of the services at the bottom of the page to display more information about that service (see Figure 1). Click on the Launch Service button and it will either start to download — in which case you’ll see a progress box, or it will inform you that the service is already installed and give you instructions to access it from your browser, or reinstall it if you so wish.

Once the install has finished, you should be asked if you want to start Opera Unite. If not, you can start Opera Unite by selecting Tools > Opera Unite Server > Enable Opera Unite, or clicking the Opera Unite button in the bottom left corner of the browser (see Figure 2) and selecting Enable Opera Unite.

Logging in to Opera Unite

Regardless of which of the three different ways mentioned above that you used to enable Opera Unite, you should now be looking at the first step of a wizard asking you to Log in into your Opera account, as seen in Figure 3.
The Opera Unite log in screen
Figure 3: The Opera Unite log in screen
To use Opera Unite Services, you need to log into Opera. This is the same login that you use to log in to My Opera, Dev Opera, or Opera Link.
Go ahead and fill in your details now. If you haven’t got an Opera log-in already, you can create one by clicking the “I don’t have an account yet” button, and filling in a slightly longer — but still self-explanatory — form. Click OK to continue, and you should now be logged in to Opera Unite! You'll know you are logged in sucessfully when the icon shown in Figure 2 lights up.

Choosing an Opera Unite name for your computer

The next thing you should do is click on the Figure 2 icon and select the Configure... option. You’ll now be prompted to choose a name for your computer from a drop-down list, as shown in Figure 4 (you can also choose to disable Opera Unite from this screen; don't worry about the other option for now).
choosing an Opera Unite identification name for your computer
Figure 4: Choosing an Opera Unite identification name for your computer
This name is basically your computer’s identity on the Opera Unite system — this is the URL that your contacts can go to if they want to make use of your Opera Unite Services, and share them with you.
The URL system used to involve a special protocol of unite:// for the service owners, but this has since been changed to use simple http://admin.. So the URL pattern is still http://mymac.chrismills.operaunite.com/opera_messenger/, for example, for a service viewed by one of your contacts, or http://admin.mymac.chrismills.operaunite.com/opera_messenger/ if you are viewing the service as an administrator, which will give you the service admin page.
Click Finish.

Finding your way around Opera Unite

The first place to go is the screen shown in Figure 5 — this is your Opera Unite homepage, and you can get to it by:
  • Clicking the Opera Unite icon in the bottom left hand corner of your browser (remember Figure 2) and selecting My Opera Unite Page
  • Selecting Tools > Opera Unite Server > My Opera Unite Page
Opera Unite enabled and ready to use
Figure 5: Opera Unite now enabled and ready to use
Note that there are a few preinstalled services in the alpha build. We may or may not include preinstalled services in the final version but would like to hear your feedback on this point.
Your home page contains:
  • The URL that your friends can navigate to, to get to your services; as mentioned before, in my case it is http://mymac.chrismills.operaunite.com/). This is in the top-right of the screen
  • A link to the Opera Unite homepage, where you can download more services and find more information — Get more services
  • A list of the services you have running
  • A list of the services some of your friends are running
The next thing to know about is the Opera Unite Services panel — this appears on the left of your screen when you select the Manage Services option from the Opera Unite menu (see Figure 6). You can also get to it by clicking the Opera Unite icon in the icon tray on the very left of the browser window, or by selecting Tools > Opera Unite Server > Manage Services.
Bottom left Opera Unite icon when enabled
Figure 6: The bottom left-hand corner Opera Unite icon, when enabled
The Opera Unite Services panel looks like Figure 7. This panel has a link to your Opera Unite home page, plus an icon for each service you have installed. It also has a trash can icon for you to get rid of services you don’t want to run anymore — to get rid of a service, just drag its icon to the Trash.

Let’s collaborate! using Opera Unite Services

Now we’ve finished our Opera Unite tour, let’s start doing something interesting! To appreciate the power of Opera Unite Services, you need a friend, or friends, who are online and willing to collaborate with you. If you don’t have a friend, then you’ll have to settle for another computer in your house or office, or even another Web browser on the same computer. You need Opera Unite to actually host and run services, but, to merely consume them, all you need is a Web browser pointed at the Opera Unite home page of the person running the services — http://mymac.chrismills.operaunite.com/. Try it in Firefox, Safari, or Opera Mobile!
Before we can share anything with our friends, we need to run some services. Let’s do that now.

Having a chat with your friends on Opera Unite

On your Unite-enabled browser, double-click the Opera Unite The Lounge service to start it running. You’ll be greeted by the Lounge screen, as shown in Figure 8
Logging in to the Opera Unite Lounge service
Figure 8: Logging in to the Opera Unite Lounge service
Now get your friend to navigate to your Opera Unite homepage and double click your Lounge service. They will first be prompted to choose a name to be known by inside the lounge, then you should be able to start chatting away to one another, as shown in Figure 9.
Having a good conversation in the Opera Unite Lounge with Opera Having a good conversation in the Opera Unite Lounge with Firefox
Figure 9: Two friends having a good conversation in the Opera Unite Lounge — one using Opera, and one using Firefox
If you have more friends with the Opera Unite build running, get them to join in your chat as well, in the same way!
Although this only scratches the surface of what is possible with Opera Unite, you must admit that it is nice to be able to have a chat with your friends online without needing to involve any third-party Web sites, or download any messenger applications.

Sharing some music with your friends

Now let’s have a look at sharing some media with your friends. In the same manner as seen above, double-click the Opera Unite Media Player service. You will be greeted by a dialog box as seen in Figure 10.
choosing a folder to share files from
Figure 10: Choosing a folder from which to share files
Here you need to do one simple thing - select the folder on your hard drive that you will select media from. Select a folder full of MP3s on your HDD (or create one and select it if you don't already have something handy lying around) and click OK.
This is something important to note in Opera Unite — some services require you to specify a folder to share files from, and some don’t. It makes sense to create a special folder for each Opera Unite service you are using to share files, so you can easily control what you are sharing, and don’t give access to anything you’d rather not share.
When you click OK, you should be greeted by a screen like the one in Figure 11.
The media player service settings screen
Figure 11: The Media Player service-settings screen
This has four interesting features:
  • It lists the files inside the folder you selected in the above step. You can click the play buttons to play the songs, or use the other controls to Autoplay, Shuffle, order, and search through the songs as you like. This is the main panel on the top left
  • It gives you the URL you need to share with your friend(s) to allow them to access your music ’ this is at the top right
  • It allows you to set 3 different security levels for your music:
    1. Public: Everyone can access it freely without a password
    2. Limited: Your friends and colleagues can access it, as long as you give them the correct URL containing the password.
    3. Private: Only you can access it.
  • It also lists other people running this service, and some of the other services your friends are running at that time
Now send your friend(s) the URL listed in the top right of your Media Player screen (see Figure 11); if they access your service using this URL, it will bring up the screen shown in Figure 12.
your friend can use the Media Player to play your media live on their machine
Figure 12: Your Friend can use the Media Player to play your media live on their machine
They can now double-click on the track names to hear them, straight from your hard drive. If they tried to access the Limited access service without being given the special password URL, for example http://work.chrismills.operaunite.com/media_player/, they would be directed to you to request access to your service, as shown in Figure 13.
if you try to access a limited access service without having the password url, you are directed to contact the service owner about it
